“We Have Made Sufficient Preparations” – Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael
Mekelle – Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, who was heard in 2013 (Ethiopian Calendar/2020 GC) saying “we are prepared in every aspect,” has once again stated that if it comes to force, “we can do everything; we have all the capabilities.”
On the occasion of the 51st anniversary of February 11 (Yekatit 11) and the current situation, the Chairman of the TPLF, Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, gave a statement to Tigray media outlets.
Accusations Against the Federal Government
The Chairman indicated that the Federal Government is attempting to intimidate the public by claiming, “It is not like before; I will use technology to pluck them out from wherever they are.” He further stated that the Federal Government, which previously violated the Pretoria Agreement only through rhetoric, is now breaking it in practice—specifically by violating the ceasefire provisions defined in the accord.

Diplomatic Efforts and Tensions
Dr. Debretsion reported that provocations are continuing under the threat of “crushing the people of Tigray.” He explained that the people of Tigray have expressed through various means their desire for:
- Respect for the Constitution.
- The restoration of Tigray’s territorial integrity.
- The return of displaced persons.
He clarified that the TPLF has sent over 10 letters to the international community, specifically the African Union (AU), and approximately 6 letters requesting an assessment of the Pretoria Agreement’s implementation.
Survival and Unity
Despite these diplomatic efforts, he noted that the Federal Government continues to issue public threats. He reminded the public that since the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) canceled the TPLF’s legal registration as of May 6, 2017 (E.C.), the party’s legal status remains a point of contention.
Calling on Tigrayans at home and abroad to strengthen their unity, Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael warned that a “new danger” is approaching—not just the failure to restore territory, but a threat to invade Tigray entirely. He characterized this as an existential challenge to the survival of the people, stating:
“We have entered a heavy stage of struggle to ensure the right to self-determination.”
On Readiness and Peace
“We said we would negotiate with the Federal Government, not go to war; however, we will not allow any force to kneel and rule us,” Dr. Debretsion said. He claimed that even as the Federal army moves closer to Tigray’s borders and surrounds them, they remain committed to resolving issues through dialogue.
However, he added a stern warning:
“We will not be patient with any force that tramples on peace talks to kneel us. No Tigrayan will tolerate this. We will not sit with folded hands while forces work to erase us from the face of the earth. Our preparation is not like it was in 2013 (2020 GC).”
Observer Reactions and Criticism
Observers have noted the similarity between these words and his statements six years ago, when he claimed they had “all necessary capabilities.” Critics point out the discrepancy between past rhetoric and the reality that followed on the ground.
Currently, as Tigray enters another round of significant challenges, Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael serves as the Chairman of the National Committee established to lead Tigray out of this crisis. Some members of the TPLF Central Committee have reacted to his recent claims of being “fully prepared” with skepticism, while others have voiced opposition, stating:
“A leadership that has admitted to ‘leadership failure’ cannot lead and win a struggle again.”
